Acne: A Teen’s Nightmare, an Adult’s Demise!
by Yosef Pollack, L.Ac.
Acne is tough for kids. It hits them at a time when they are already struggling with self-esteem issues and only compounds problems. For adults, however, acne is even worse. Not only can you get pimples at any time in your life, but also acne scarring never goes away. It is especially embarrassing to have zits when you are a grown man or woman.
The Chinese have been using a proven treatment to get rid of acne for thousands of years. Recently, studies by western researchers have started to show that acupuncture works to treat acne. They do not know why it works, but it does. Acupuncture is an all-natural treatment without any drugs, chemicals or side effects, and it is now starting to catch on in the west.
The Causes of Acne
There’s a difference in how western and Chinese medicine see the causes of acne. Western medicine sees it as a problem of hair follicles and skin. Hair follicles can be stuck in a clogged pore, and the whole mess becomes a pimple. Hormones and bacteria may also cause it.
Chinese medicine sees it as a problem with your body’s balance. The major cause is ‘damp heat’ that clogs the channels through which your energy, or qi, flows. It’s especially caused by imbalance of the stomach, lungs and spleen channels. Acupuncture works to open up these channels at key points and like western medicine, help regulate hormones in the body.
One area where they agree is that lifestyle plays a major role. Both Chinese and western doctors know that a diet of oily and spicy foods contributes to acne. What you put into your body comes out again.
How Acupuncture Works To Treat Acne
Acne treatments are usually long term, including several visits. It depends on what your doctor advises based on the progress, but they will usually have you come in 3 to 6 times for treatment. It can take a while to see results, so they’ll be monitoring you as well.
They usually recommend doing acupuncture during these treatments. Chinese medicine sees the body as a unified whole whose balance can be disrupted, and this leads to illness. Because of this, they’ll use acupuncture throughout the whole body to treat acne. They may focus on the channels that lead to the stomach, spleen and lungs.
Along with acupuncture, they will recommend that you use traditional Chinese herbs. These are all-natural remedies that have been used for thousands of years in China. I hate to tell you this, but they probably will not be tasty! Nevertheless, they will work. For example, acne treatments usually include very bitter-tasting herbs. These fight the damp heat that causes acne. They also may give you herbs that help detoxify your liver and the rest of your body.
Results vary widely from person to person. You will get the best results by not only making your acupuncture sessions and drinking your herbal tea (or readily available herbal formulas in pill form), but also by making some changes in your lifestyle and eating habits. Your doctor will explain what you should do.
Seeking treatment will banish acne forever. Acupuncture is a great way to fight acne, whether you are a troubled teen or an adult that hates to get pimples.
